KRISS LARSON'S EUROPEAN NDB IMAGES

~~ GALLERY TWO ~~

On this page you will find a collection of photographs of NDBs taken during a visit Kriss made to the Canary Isles in 2013. In this collection are a number of shots of the NDBs: 'BX' on 389.0 kHz at La Palma, 'LZ' on 310.0 kHz at Lanzarote, 'FP' on 420.0 kHz at Tenerife North and 'TES' on 317.0 kHz at Tenerife South. Kriss mentioned that all the Canary NDBs were very strong both day and night, and that Faro on the Portugal coast, and Porto Santo in Madiera were also tunable anytime, though they are/were high power transoceanic beacons which were important in the days before GPS--it was obvious that the plane to and from Madrid went out to sea just at Faro to the Canaries.

NOTE# All of the following pictures are copyright 'Kriss Larson', and should not be re-produced with out first obtaining his permission - please ask us for his contact details if you should require them.

NDB "LZ - 310.0 kHz", LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLES:
LZ 310.0 kHz
LZ on 310.0 kHz at Lanzarote, Canary Isles - Lanzorote radiobeacon with some Canary Island palms.

LZ 310.0 kHz
Lanzorote NDB is LZ 310 kHz, in the middle of a frequency range now mainly used for DGPS beacons.

NDB "BX - 389.0 kHz", LA PALMA, CANARY ISLES:
BX 389.0 kHz
This NDB operates to the south of La Palma Airport. You can see the Pico de Teide Mountain on Tenerife 72 miles away in the distance.

BX 389.0 kHz
A shot of the La Palma NDB, with stem succulent Kleinia neriifoliaan.

NDB "TES - 317.0 kHz", TENERIFE SOUTH, CANARY ISLES:
TES 317.0 kHz
Tenerife Sur NDB with some native plants. The VHF comms antennas are located in the same complex.

TES 317.0 kHz
This is of the same construction as the other Canary Isles beacons, and the transmission has a long gap between idents.

NDB "FP - 420.0 kHz", TENERIFE NORTH, CANARY ISLES:
FP 420.0 kHz
Tenerife Norte NDB, located next to the highway just west of the field.

FP 420.0 kHz
The last running of what was once 3 beacons in North Tenerife - elevation 2000'- just the right height for the chronic fog conditions like those that occurred during the infamous plane crash there.
