On this page you will find some images of a trip to Beaver Island in northern Lake Michigan, which Russell and Andy made in June 2013, this features the island's infamous NDB 'SJX'. This beacon is infamous because SJX has been stable on the "split" frequency of 381.5 kHz for at least four decades instead of its assigned carrier frequency of 382 kHz. Andy also says that despite its modest size (13 miles long by six wide), Beaver Island has two airfields, but the other field does not have its own beacon, and that SJX is still very much among the living as they could hear it on the car radio on its third harmonic once they got close enough.
My thanks to Andy for sharing the pictures of the trip with us, and if anyone else out there has any interesting NDB pictures they would like to see displayed here please feel free to contact me with the details. I'll be only too happy to create a page here in the gallery and display them for you!
