This airport is located in the southwest corner of the state, less than 10 miles from the Iowa line and about 60 miles from South Dakota on I-90. The airport is easy to find and the beacon was right on the main driveway to the airport – very easy to photograph. Unfortunately, it was off the air. Everything looked complete and the transmitter cabin fed a rather larger than average loop feeding the two wires between the poles. See the pictures for more detail. The beacon is owned and operated by the City of Jackson which may explain why it was not transmitting. As I research these beacons, I am concluding that ownership is important. The two beacons I visited today that are not owned and operated by the state appear to transmit infrequently or upon request only. This will be further researched as I visit more of these beacons.

Located about 9 or 10 miles from the Iowa State Line, this was the final stop on my September 10 trip. This beacon was on the air, sounding good, and it was easy to get to on 385th Ave. The only problem getting to 385th Ave. was a bad detour through town on highway 169 getting to and from the airport. I have occasionally picked up this beacon at my home QTH. The airport was totally dead with no activity whatsoever. There was a warning sign to farmers asking them not to plant crops within the fence perimeter. The beacon is owned and operated by the State of Minnesota.

The second beacon I visited on the September 10th trip was ULM. This was another 3 pole setup. This was the only airport that was busy during my visit. The beacon is a three tower affair that is viewable from Highland Road however it is far enough away from the public road that I would suggest using a telephoto or zoom lens if you wish to photograph it. It would also be helpful if you photograph before the crops grow tall and block the view. Tuning the radio to the ULM frequency, I found it was on the air. I have never picked up this beacon in St. Paul and it seemed to me that it was a somewhat weak signal even standing several hundred feet from it. But, it was on and that's what counts. This beacon is owned by the State of Minnesota.
