BDB 336.0 kHzBDB on 336.0 kHz 'Accomack' Melfa, VA: kHz at 'Shannon' Fredericksburg, VA:

Located off Coal Kiln Road (VA Route 609) in a heavily wooded area about 1.2 miles south of Painter, VA, this NDB is owned and operated by the Virginia Department of Aviation. The tower, about 90 ft tall, is identical in height and all other aspects to two other VA owned NDBs, NSQ-357 Culpepper, VA (Gallery 22) and MK_335, Marion, VA (Gallery 2). Their general configuration is judged to be quite efficient for both BDB and NSQ are often heard during daytime hours at my NJ QTH ~200 miles distant. (497.0kb)

TE 214.0 kHzTE on 214.0 kHz at Teterboro, NJ:

New Jersey is purported to be the most densely populated state in the Union. Hence, at least in northeastern New Jersey, a problem arises in finding an open area to site an NDB. Apparently such was the case with NDB TE-214 (Teterboro) which is located in Lynhurst, NJ, a residential community where the usual building lot is of dimensions 50 ft (width) x 75 ft (depth). As the Goggle Earth maps shows, TE-214 is located on a double-width lot in a densely packed residential neighborhood. (234.0kb)
TE 214.0 kHzTE on 214.0 kHz at Teterboro, NJ:

Located along Thomas Ave in Lynhurst, NJ, TE-214 is about 5 miles southeast of Teterboro Airport, a busy air terminal supporting many business jets. Note that the support poles of the symmetric-T seen in this picture are only about 20 ft tall, and as such the top of the 'T' is roughly at the same height as the roofs of the surrounding houses and trees. Hence an rf shielding effect is expected. It is thought that such is the reason that, although only 51 miles distant, this beacon was not often heard at my NJ QTH. (527.0kb)
