MK 335.0 kHzMK on 335.0 kHz at Marion, VA:

This NDB, although administratively listed as in Marion, VA, is actually physically located along Radio Drive in Rural Retreat, VA. It is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Aviation. One of the unusual aspects of this installation is that the antenna tower tilts about 15 degrees from the vertical towards the north. The tilt, seen in this picture, may be due to improper anchoring of the tower's base. A poured concrete block, usually used to anchor an antenna's base, was not seen at this site. However the tilt may be due to wind damage. This area of southwest Virginia was struck by a tornado last year (in 2011). (466.0 kb)
MK 335.0 kHzMK on 335.0 kHz at Marion, VA:

Located in an open field, this NDB is readily in view when driving past on US Interstate I81. Note that the tower's tilt is clearly visible in this picture. (182.0 kb)
MK 335.0 kHzMK on 335.0 kHz at Marion, VA:

View of the antenna's top hat. All of the guy lines seem taut and correctly positioned at 120 degree intervals. Hence it is not considered likely that the tower will collapse. (117.0 kb)
MK 335.0 kHzMK on 335.0 kHz at Marion, VA:

Another usual aspect of this installation: it encompasses a very small security area - 6 x 10 foot and enclosed by a pre-fab fence of the type readily available at home supply centers and commonly used for a dog pen. (480.0 kb)
MK 335.0 kHzMK on 335.0 kHz at Marion, VA:

The tower itself is the radiating element being insolated from ground by insulators separating the lower few feet of the tower. The feed is just above one of the insulators via a copper wire (#10 or #12) with its insulation scraped off at the point of connection. Note the aluminum heat sinks on the cover of the box on the right. The identity of the components mounted on these heat sink is open to speculation for they are hidden from view being covered by silver tape (presumed waterproof). (316.0 kb)
