ALAN GALE'S MANCHESTER NDB IMAGES

~~ GALLERY FOUR ~~

On this page you will find some images of the old Non-Directional Beacon at Manchester International Airport in the UK. This beacon closed down in 2009 and I was half expecting it to have been dismantled and removed by now, but was very surprised (and pleased) to see that it was still in place during my visit in August 2013, and I'm now wondering if this is being kept as a back up for the Manchester VOR in case that should ever fail? The callsign of this when it was active, was 'MCH' and it operated on 428.0 kHz. Its listed position was at: N53 21 12, W002 16 23. I'd only ever been able to photograph this beacon from the Aviation Viewing Park on previous visits, but this time I decided to walk around the field to the south side to get some shots from a better location which is much closer to the beacon.

Close up shot of the NDB. Note# the very large vertical mast that can be seen on the top of the hill in the background is the Winter Hill TV transmitter which supplies Terrestrial TV signals for the north west of England. With a mast height of 309.48 metres (1,015.4 ft) it is one of the tallest structures in the United Kingdom, making the top of the mast some 778.1 metres (2,553 ft) above sea level, which is in comparison to the NDB, which is about 70 Metres (230 feet) above sea level.
